The Spooky Side of Montauk Nature
Ok, thats kind of clickbait BUT Montauk does have some pretty impressive nightlife and creepy nature tales! As we head into October, read about some Montauk wildlife and history!
Who's Awake After Dark?
While you're getting ready for bed, plenty of Montauk's wildlife is just getting started.
Owls and other nighttime animals are adapted to life after sunset. Some use excellent hearing to find food, while others rely on their ability to see in low light.

You might not see them, but that doesn't mean they're not there!
Great Horned Owl: One of Montauk's most common species! They are most commonly heard during cold winter nights!
Strange Things on the Shore
Montauk's beaches can turn up some pretty unusual discoveries. This summer we had the suprise of a giant dead whale wash up on shore, which many theroized was due to human activites, such as a run in with a boat, an fishing incident, etc. Human's are some of natures scariest creatures when it comes to safety!!
The Ghost Light of Montauk Point
Montauk Point Lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses in the whole country, it was even ordered by George Washington himself way back in 1792! For hundreds of years, its bright beam has helped guide ships safely past our rocky coast.
Sailors used to tell spooky stories about strange lights flickering near the cliffs on foggy nights, lights that didn't come from the lighthouse at all. Some thought it was a ghost keeper still watching over the coast!
Turns out, the real explanation is totally natural: thick fog can bend and scatter light in weird ways, making beams bounce and shimmer where you don't expect them. Add some crashing waves, and it's easy to see how sailors long ago might've believed in ghosts.
